Understanding High-End cables

If you’ve gone to the effort of auditioning and purchasing high-quality Audion equipment, it would be a foolish act to cable the system with cheap interconnects and power cords. The extra detail, emotion and musical involvement you’ve just paid to enjoy can often be lost with a poor cable.

There are two key areas in cable design: conductor and dielectric. The conductor carries the audio signal and is therefore a critical factor for good performance. The conductor material is obviously important but so also is the purity of that material. Copper and Silver are by far the most popular, but it is also important to be aware of the quality. The dielectric is the material that is used to insulate the conductors. It is important to use high-quality materials because of the complex negative effects that inferior dielectric can have on the signal. Good dielectric possesses low dielectric constance. Non-conductive materials which do not retain an electrical charge are better dielectric and have less detrimental effect on the transmitted signal.

Naturally better conductors and dielectric cost more than standard copper/silver or rubber (poor dielectric). This has a knock-on effect to basic cable costs, but these increases are more than justified when you compare the increases in audio performance and musical enjoyment.

“Why Isn’t Regular Copper Good?”

To obtain the best from your audio system we should avoid putting barriers in the way of the signal. In its basic form (TPC) copper contains many impurities with small crystals. Small crystals make it hard for fragile audio signals to pass because of the inclusion of hydrogen and oxygen that typically surround each grain. Imagine trying to cross a river on small stepping stones. It would be much easier if there were a bridge. Purer copper, for example OFC, PC-OFC, PCOCC with larger crystals reduces distortions which are commonly described as ‘harshness’.

Choosing A High Fidelity Cable

Maximise your investment, start with the best loudspeaker cable and interconnect cable you can afford. If you can only afford one good length of interconnect, use this on your highest performance source component, be it a CD player or turntable.

We strongly recommend using the same technology of cable throughout your system. In most applications you may use either shielded or unshielded interconnect, but for longer runs (10 ft plus) we’ve found shielded is best. Make sure your connections are good. Clean connectors regularly with a contact enhancer.

Don’t order too short. Before you order measure the distances between your components carefully. Allow enough length for the cables to gracefully bend around corners. Don’t fold cables as this will only damage the conductors. Once installed keep your cables clean and static free.

Indeed, the amount of improvement can be astounding, often transforming a system from good to amazing. As audiophiles, we trust our ears but it’s hard to understand how replacing just one short link in a long chain of the power delivery system can have such a dramatic impact

There are a lot of misconceptions about power transmission and power quality that make it difficult for some people to understand why a power cord makes a sonic difference –in fact the question is do power cords make any difference at all? Most of the people that use our power cords started out as skeptics and have answered that question for themselves.

Shielding can also represent a problem. Insulation can reduce radiated fields from impacting other components. On the other hand, the shielding may induce re-radiated fields onto the cable or component that it is being used in. Sometimes the cure may be worse than the illness. This is where experience and knowledge pays off - to make a good cable of any description you need to apply intelligence with a small dose of intuition to create a world class product

Getting the most from your Audion Cables or any other cables

Get The Best From Your Cables

• Because all wire degrades the signal passing through it, the less wire you have in your system, the better. Keep interconnects and loudspeaker cable runs as short as possible, but try not to order too short.

• Keep left and right loudspeaker cables and interconnects the same length. If you have excess cable or interconnect, don’t wind it into a neat loop as this will make the cable more inductive and change its characteristics. Instead, drape the cable so it crosses other loops at right angles.

• Periodically disconnect all interconnects and loudspeaker cable for cleaning. Oxide builds up on jacks and plugs, interfering with the electrical transfer. Use a contact cleaner. In fact, switching interconnects sometimes cleans the jacks, making the system sound better even though the interconnect may not be intrinsically better.

• When connecting and disconnecting RCA plugs, always grip the plug, never the cable.

• Ensure tight connection of all RCA plugs, and particularly spade lugs on power amplifiers and loudspeakers. Get lots of contact surface area between the spade lug and the post, then tighten down the binding posts.

• Route interconnects and cables away from power cords. If AC power cables must meet interconnects or loudspeaker cables, then cross them at 90 degree angles. Never allow power cables and interconnects or loudspeaker cables to run in parallel next to each other. This will prevent crosstalk between cables

• Keep digital and analogue interconnects well away from each other. The high-frequency noise from digital interconnects can pollute the analogue lines.
